The Lochcarron Jacobite

The Lochcarron Quilters and Stitchers came together to stitch the history of their area into their panel and were able to use local materials generously donated by Lochcarron Weavers to bring their Jacobite figure to life.

This is their story.

Lochcarron is an area of outstanding natural beauty and rich heritage reflected in the design of our tapestry panel.

The central image features our Jacobite. The Jacobite's supported the deposed king James II and his descendants with the ultimate goal of restoring the Stuarts to the throne. There are many sites around the Highlands which are associated with famous Jacobite battles and perhaps our soldier is heading off to fight? We captured movement in his clothing by using different tweeds, materials and stitching techniques to bring him to life as he marches through the landscape.

Lochcarron is well known for weaving and textiles and we were fortunate to be able to use local materials in our panel. Weaving in Lochcarron started back in 1938 when a Mr Wood was sent from Galashiels, in the Scottish Borders, from the home of the company. He was to teach the art of weaving to the folk of Strathcarron. Local wool spun by the women of Lochcarron and the surrounding parishes was used in the making of tweeds, white blankets and rugs.

our journey stones

We wanted to capture some of what makes our area special to us by stitching what we can see from our doorstep. The beautiful surroundings inspired our panel as we reflected on the natural environment and our community, how the two interact and how we care for what we have.
