A Journey Stone tribute to the tragic story of Lady Hambro of Glen Doe, Fort Augustus

The Hambro Memorial was erected in memory of Lady Hambro of Glen Doe lodge Fort Augustus who drowned in Loch Ness in 1932 when their pleasure boats caught fire. Her husband and sons, and also their Governess, survived but despite weeks searching for her no trace was ever found. It was reported at the time she was wearing a valuable set of pearls (also show on the panel).

WHAT IS A JOURNEY STONE?

Prior to the beginning of the stitching of each tapestry panel, each stitcher of the Tapestry of the Highlands and Islands was tasked with telling their interpretation of the 'Spirit of the Highlands and Islands' within a blank outline of a stone. The possibilities were truly endless - is it represented in the land? The people? A historical site? A favourite memory?
