A Year of Spirit: Stories
Spring has well and truly sprung across the Highlands and Islands! As the days get brighter and we emerge out of the harsh winter nights there’s an element of optimism in the air that is hard to miss. At the SOTHI team, we’re feeling particularly uplifted this week as we are celebrating a wonderful milestone - the first anniversary of Spirit: Stories!
While the initial call for stories was published back in 2020, the launch of the Spirit: Stories digital archive in April last year marked the first time that the stories submitted to the Spirit of the Highlands and Islands project were made available to all online. Over a year later, the Spirit: Stories archive is still blossoming.
If we have learned anything in the past year is that the spirit of storytelling is still thriving across the Highlands and Islands – a never-wavering, integral part of our culture. As a team, we have very much enjoyed being able to read such a wide variety of personal stories and experiences from communities across the Highlands and Islands and beyond. With every new story, the archive continues to form a unique, current perspective on what it means to be a part of the Highlands and Islands and local tales which have helped to shape the natural and cultural heritage of the region. Truly, we are delighted to be even a small part of this continuing tradition and cannot thank you enough for sharing your wonderful stories with us here.
In honour of the welcoming of Spring and the first anniversary of Spirit: Stories we have selected some inspiring stories for you in a variety of different forms to explore. Read on below!
