The Tapestry of the Highlands and Islands is a huge community arts project involving over 600 volunteers from across the region. The Tapestry was designed by artist Dr Andrew Crummy MBE, using community stories as inspiration for the panel images.
The stitching of the Tapestry was co-ordinated by professional textile artist Kirstie Campbell, who helped the stitchers with her expertise and led them in the gathering of materials, textiles and inspiration for their panels.
The Tapestry was also supported by Jan Rutherford, Anna Marshall and Ben Makin who were instrumental in gathering the volunteers together and organising workshops across the region.
The Tapestry consists of 57 embroidered panels containing stories from across the Highlands and Islands, stitched into the fabric by our skilled volunteers. The panels are a visual vehicle for themes such as geology, history, nature, culture and contemporary stories of the region.
Discover the stories of the Tapestry of the Highlands and Islands through our virtual exhibition and in local venues.
