STITCHING THE TAPESTRY OF THE HIGHLANDS AND ISLANDS

This audio forms part of a series of audio interviews conducted in 2023 by Smartify as part of the Spirit of the Highlands and Islands project. Listen and discover the Spirit of the Highlands and Islands through the eyes of the stitchers of the Tapestry of the Highlands and Islands.

Join Alison, Caroline, Jimmy and June of the Maerl Stitchers as they discuss the evolution of their panel, working together as a team, building a better understanding of place while stitching and reflecting on the local area.

[Jimmy] ...how I've thought about it it's a riverbed and it's continually changing. One stone will never be in the same place all the time. So, there's that many different stones there, and different views, and different opinions of how people see them, it's grown, as you say organically...

[June] Equally people say sew what you see, you know, sign what you see but when we were discussing it we found as we walk around the place it's quite reflective. So, perhaps what you're seeing in your head, in your mind, it's not necessarily what is in front of you but it is an association with the community...it's that sense of reflection there's a lot of that in it. I think we would all agree that when we're out walking the dog or trumping around the glens or wherever, your mind is elsewhere.

[Jimmy] Aye, that's true. You can be lost in a busy place.
