Kingussie's Beating Heart

By Alison MacKeachan

Two shinty camans are crossed in the centre of the stitched piece. The words 'Kingussie', 'the DELL' and the year '1890' are stitched in red. An artistic tribute to shinty - the beating heart of KIngussie.

In Kingussie (Scottish Gaelic: Ceann a' Ghiùthsaich), shinty is a way of life - the beating heart of the community. There are even stories of locals captured in the war, who made camans from tree branches to play their sport in the concentration camp where they were imprisoned. Still today, local volunteers work tirelessly in support of the club which brings together players (male, female, child, adult), families, supporters - i.e., the community - driving a culture of health, fitness, inclusivity and pride. The shinty community supports their own when needed and rejoices in celebration when it all comes good. They say it takes a village to raise a child...well, in Kingussie, shinty is that village. My husband, son and I are proud of our association with the Club, through our son's lifelong involvement as a player. My journey stone depicts, therefore, the famous Kingussie Shinty Club, est 1890... and still going strong.
