This audio forms part of a series of audio interviews conducted in 2022 by Smartify as part of the Spirit of the Highlands and Islands project. Listen and discover the Spirit of the Highlands and Islands through the eyes of the people who live, work and visit here.

In our 'In Focus' audio mini-series, take a closer look into a wide range of topics spanning the vast natural and cultural heritage of the Highlands and Islands. In this edition of 'In Focus', listen to Carol Dunbar as she discusses Margaret Gardiner (1904-2005) and the origins of the Pier Arts Centre. An author, philanthropist and peace activist, Gardiner was a keen supporter of Orkney artists and founder of the Pier Arts Centre gallery which continues to be a vibrant home for fine art and a focal point for creative minds across the Orkney Isles.

...you do feel her presence still and it is that generosity of her gift...that commitment - it does make us all pretty passionate about what's here.
