Heartlands - Making Cords at School

TELLING THE STORY OF THE HEARTLANDS PANEL
Trevor’s three cord winding machines were taken to Breadalbane Academy, Aberfeldy and Killin Primary School for the children to use and create lengths of cord for use on the tapestry, as well as using wool donated by a local charity shop to make friendship bracelets for themselves.
With the help of three staff members who tied the knots for them, groups of P2 and P3 children at Breadalbane Academy made a number of cords, choosing the colours themselves. A couple of weeks later P7 children in Killin helped by staff members also made lengths for the tapestry and for themselves, but being older were more able to tie off the end knots, and one child explained that he was well able to do so “because he went fishing”! All the cords made by the children are being used on the panel to frame individual journey stones. One cord winder has been left with each school so that they can use them for future craft projects.

Prior to the beginning of the stitching of each tapestry panel, each stitcher of the Tapestry of the Highlands and Islands was tasked with telling their interpretation of the 'Spirit of the Highlands and Islands' within a blank outline of a stone. The possibilities were truly endless - is it represented in the land? The people? A historical site? A favourite memory?
