Where the fast-flowing River Thurso streams into the wild waters of the Pentland Firth you’ll find Thurso, the most northerly town on mainland Scotland and a terrific base for anyone wanting to explore the wonderful natural environment and fascinating history of Caithness.

Today, this historic town is recognised as one the UK’s top spots for watersports, home to world surfing championships even, while west of Thurso, the scenic north coast stretches away via the dramatic cliffs of Dunnet Head, the most northerly point on the British mainland. Further inland, you will find the vast area of blanket bog known as the ‘Flow Country’ which is celebrated for its superb biodiversity and birdlife.

The story of settlement in Caithness stretches back over 10,000 years, while the chronicles of Thurso itself include lengthy stretches under Viking rule. Indeed, given its long history as both a trading and cultural centre, and as a port of call for European visitors including the Norsemen, it is not surprising that Thurso continues to intrigue travellers from far and wide.

Today, Thurso and the bustling communities nearby offer up their own unique brand of Norse-Scottish culture combined with modern and traditional attractions from whisky distilleries to wonderful Royal castles. The story of the area is told in the North Coast Visitor Centre, but perhaps the most surprising part is that Thurso is an internationally renowned, much-frequented cold-water surfing destination.

The dramatic seas, local beaches and inland lochs in and around Thurso make this a hugely popular location for lovers of all watersports – with great opportunities to get out on the water for visitors of all ages and all levels of experience.
