Our History
In almost every corner of the Highlands and Islands, the presence of past society is strongly felt. From uniquely Scottish Iron Age structures like brochs, to Viking burials and homesteads, and from royal strongholds and medieval castles to military roads carved into the landscape, each has a distinct story to tell of people and place, struggle and success.
Since the glaciers shifted and carved out cliffs and valleys during the last Ice Age, the landscape of the Highlands and Islands has witnessed dramatic changes not only in nature, but also in human occupation. This melting pot of peoples who called the Highlands home created the rich cultural tapestry of the region today.
