Dry Stane Dyke

The Nimble Thimbles stitching group came together from across Inverness to stitch together the incredible stories our communities.

This is their story.

What does the Spirit of the Highlands and Islands mean to you? It's a question which has guided the Tapestry of the Highlands and Islands and its parent project for over 2 years. A question for which there are no right or wrong answers. One where the possibilities are truly endless - it's all up to you.

Modelled on a dry stane dyke, which you can see all over the Highlands and Islands, this panel transforms stitcher's answers to this very question into into a plethora of images which represent the 'spirit' of Inverness and the surrounding area.

Having the individual stones come together in a traditional dry stane dyke is symbolic in that stone by stone, story by story and region by region we as the community are the makers of our history, our present and our future.

It also signals that our journeys, memories and the things we hold dear all come together to form a unique sense, or 'spirit', place. We are all here. We are all human. We all have a connection to this wonderful part of the world and what matters to you, matters to the collective.

A dry stane dyke full of stories.
