Spirit of the Highlands and Islands

I belong to the Maerl tapestry group based in Arisaig. I live in Roshven which looks out over the Isles of Eigg and Rum. Having spent 35 odd years visiting the area with my canoe club and going into depression every time we crossed the border back into England my then partner, now husband, and I decided that we had to retire to Scotland. Mainly for the scenery, the peace and quiet, the night skies and then we discovered the community. The Scots are wonderful people who envelope you into their way of life. We have achieved our aim and neither of us would want to live anywhere else. I am honoured to be a part of this project.

Prior to the beginning of the stitching of each tapestry panel, each stitcher of the Tapestry of the Highlands and Islands was tasked with telling their interpretation of the 'Spirit of the Highlands and Islands' within a blank outline of a stone. The possibilities were truly endless - is it represented in the land? The people? A historical site? A favourite memory?
