Skye and Raasay - Calum's Road

By Gilly Thomson

The story of "Calum's Road" for me encapsulates the Spirit of the Highlands.

His story has been written up in a book by Roger Hutchinson. The man's determination to improve communication to his community, in spite of the lack of support from the local authority, highlights the battle that so many Scots are renowned for. Considering that it was only in 1976 that a regular car ferry service was started to the island of Rassay, it is no surprise that the population of the island was declining.
