Outlander & Inverness

By Inverness Outlanders

Inverness Outlanders is a group of Outlander fans who live in and around Inverness. The group met through a love of Diana Gabaldon’s hugely popular Outlander book series and the equally successful Starz TV series.

For over 30 years millions of people around the world have been gripped by the unfolding storylines. The story is set in the eighteenth century and starts right here in Inverness, a few years before the Battle of Culloden. Many local landmarks feature in the books ranging from castles, historic houses, churches and battlefields to retail shops and coastal locations. The fact that Diana Gabaldon chose to base the start of the series in Inverness, focusing specifically on the Battle of Culloden and the Jacobite cause, has brought worldwide attention to the area, and fans visit in their thousands to learn about the real history behind the story of Outlander.

Inverness Outlanders was set up in 2013, was constituted as a Community Group in 2018 and now meets monthly to discuss a continually growing agenda of items. The group’s aim is to share local information and connect with Outlander fans everywhere via social media. Demand for information led to the publication of an Inverness Outlander map (with Diana’s blessing), followed by an accompanying audio app. During the Covid-19 lockdown, five hour-long shows covering Outlander and Inverness related topics were streamed live, including an exclusive interview with Diana. Inverness Outlanders continues to inform and educate the ever-increasing Outlander fan base and other visitors to Inverness, about the area’s culture, heritage and local attractions from the perspective of Outlander connections or because they are associated with the history of the Jacobites and Culloden.
