Love on the Isle of Skye

By Martin Taylor

Skye is a place that lives in both of our hearts...

In 2012, as part of a dissertation for a Geology degree, I completed a 4 week residential stay at Kilbride on the Isle of Skye. Upon arrival with my 2 friends, we discovered a group from another University who were doing the same, having had no idea there would be anyone else there. It turned out one of the young ladies was from my local area in the North East of England, and we immediately hit it off.

After 4 weeks of getting to know each other on the Misty Isle, we became a couple after romantic walks on Skye. We maintained a long distance relationship until University ended, where we moved in together. In 2016, we returned to Skye on holiday and had a fantastic time exploring the island further. In 2020, in the midst of a global pandemic, we were able to return where I asked for her hand in marriage, and she said yes! This was while watching the sunset at Elgol, something we had done previously in 2012 and 2016.

Skye is a place that lives in both of our hearts, that we love to visit frequently, despite the 9 hour or so drive. We hope to return in 2021, and in future once married and with children. We often dream of moving to Skye, perhaps evens retiring on Skye to see out our days where we first met and fell in love.
