Like Waves

Tree Roots

“People long forgotten, but who carved our past and became the roots of our present being.  We are a product of our ancestors, a continuation of all that has gone before, another wave in the ocean...”

The Croft

“the story of a place which has witnessed and continues to witness the people who have come and gone, made a living, laughed, cried, worried, remembered for one or two generations then forgotten save their name...”.

“Some of the most common surnames in Highland.”

The Salmon and the Boat

“the resilience of ordinary people whose means of making a living, like the waves, came and went; crofting, herring fishing, salmon fishing, tourism, oil and gas...”

The Mermaid

“stories and the telling of stories form a meaningful link with the past and our ancestors.”

Beatrice Grant

WHAT IS A JOURNEY STONE?

Prior to the beginning of the stitching of each tapestry panel, each stitcher of the Tapestry of the Highlands and Islands was tasked with telling their interpretation of the 'Spirit of the Highlands and Islands' within a blank outline of a stone. The possibilities were truly endless - is it represented in the land? The people? A historical site? A favourite memory?

In any case, each journey stone represents the connection between each individual stitcher, their story, and their own sense, or 'spirit', of place. Discover more of the stories behind the journey stones of the Tapestry of the Highlands and Islands here.
