TELLING THE STORY OF THE HEARTLANDS PANEL

Loch Moraig and the Glen Fender Meadows are one of Edel’s special places. In spring it is covered in a carpet of wildflowers and alive with the sounds and song of the birds, particularly Edel’s favourite, the curlew.

With the colours, the clear air and sunlight, the ever-changing light and shadows, the clouds, the sound and feel of the wind, and the massive form of Beinn a Ghlo as a backdrop and with views to more distant mountains to the north, Loch Moraig is close to where Edel lives. It is an area where she used to love walking and still enjoys visiting. The Meadows are part of an area that has been designated a Special Area of Conservation and is within a SSSI.

It was stitched by Margaret with help from Edel, who is 95. She was born and partly educated in Norway and abroad but has lived in Scotland for over 50 years. She has always been an active lady, enjoying walking and hiking, and still enjoys a little bit of Nordic walking in Glen Fender with her trekking poles while in the company of friends or family regardless of the weather.

This audio forms part of a series of audio interviews conducted in 2023 by Smartify as part of the Spirit of the Highlands and Islands project. Listen and discover the Spirit of the Highlands and Islands through the eyes of the stitchers of the Tapestry of the Highlands and Islands.

Listen here to Margaret Rodgers, of the Heartlands Stitchers, as she shares Edel's story and the process behind the creation of her journey stone.

...it's just utterly beautiful meadows and a loch...well I thought 'this is a journey'. It's a journey of to her favourite place. She's showing me something that is really important to her and I'm sure we can create something out of this.
