TELLING THE STORY OF THE HEARTLANDS PANEL

Pitlochry Dam is part of the Tummel Hydro Electric Scheme and was built with a fish ladder to allow salmon to continue upstream. Annemieke, who stitched this panel, writes:

This stone has more of a local theme. It is a playful impression of the Pitlochry Hydro Dam and fish ladder. It is not meant to be a realistic image. It was quite fun to experiment with different materials such as tweed and try out different stitches. However, it does takes faith to go against the stream and jump up over a waterfall upstream. Therefore I think it sits well within the overall theme of faith.

Prior to the beginning of the stitching of each tapestry panel, each stitcher of the Tapestry of the Highlands and Islands was tasked with telling their interpretation of the 'Spirit of the Highlands and Islands' within a blank outline of a stone. The possibilities were truly endless - is it represented in the land? The people? A historical site? A favourite memory?
