TELLING THE STORY OF THE HEARTLANDS PANEL

Bou is 4 years old. While watching her mother, Raina, stitch her Healing Stones journey stone Bou wanted to do some of her own sewing at the same time and did a small piece of embroidery on her own canvas. Later, there was enough linen left over however for her to do her own small journey stone too. She stitched shooting stars, hearts and wiggly lines as well as her own name, in fact everything apart from her age.

Bou says “I have a spiderman costume” – she likes being Spiderman! She is also very good at standing on one leg and jumping over puddles.

Many thanks to the Heartland Stitchers, and to Bou and Raina, for sharing with us this incredible story behind their panel, created as part of the Tapestry of the Highlands and Islands.

Prior to the beginning of the stitching of each tapestry panel, each stitcher of the Tapestry of the Highlands and Islands was tasked with telling their interpretation of the 'Spirit of the Highlands and Islands' within a blank outline of a stone. The possibilities were truly endless - is it represented in the land? The people? A historical site? A favourite memory?

In any case, each journey stone represents the connection between each individual stitcher, their story, and their own sense, or 'spirit', of place. Discover more of the stories behind the journey stones of the Tapestry of the Highlands and Islands here.
