Glorious Skies

By Alison Horsley

An artistic tribute to beautiful and vibrant sunsets in the Highlands.
Image provided by Alison Horsley

I was asked to choose a subject for my journey stone. My reasons for loving living in Arisaig & the Highlands. It was a hard choice because there are so many wonderful reasons. I decided on a 'sunset' as they are so beautiful. The colour of the sky is never the same, the setting of the sun is always to me very magical. The light of the sea, mountains and the islands as the sun disappears are amazing and I feel so lucky to live in such a stunning environment. I wanted to try and capture the colours from a photo I took a few years ago from Back of Keppoch. The sky that night was full of vibrant shades of red/yellow/purple/orange and beautiful misty clouds over the mountains. They are never the same and that is what I love the most.

Many thanks to Alison Horsley for sharing with us the story behind her journey stone, created as part of the Tapestry of the Highlands and Islands.

WHAT IS A JOURNEY STONE?

Prior to the beginning of the stitching of each tapestry panel, each stitcher of the Tapestry of the Highlands and Islands was tasked with telling their interpretation of the 'Spirit of the Highlands and Islands' within a blank outline of a stone. The possibilities were truly endless - is it represented in the land? The people? A historical site? A favourite memory?

In any case, each journey stone represents the connection between each individual stitcher, their story, and their own sense, or 'spirit', of place. Discover more of the stories behind the journey stones of the Tapestry of the Highlands and Islands here.
