Spotlight Shorts: SOTHI and the ScotsInUS Podcast

Good morning everyone and a very happy, although belated, Independence Day to our readers from the USA!

For the project team, one of the many joys of working on this project is being able to connect with people all over the Highlands and Islands, and beyond. We have had the pleasure to hear from so many diaspora communities across the world, particularly from the United States and Canada, who have shared with us what the Highlands and Islands mean to them as well as their relationship to Scotland. Ever dynamic and diverse, the connections between the United States and the Highlands and Islands and Scotland as a nation span over three centuries. As a result, there are a number of great organisations and societies all across the United States which celebrate these links between Scotland and Scottish-American communities. One such organisation is the American-Scottish Foundation.

Founded in New York City in 1956 by Lord Malcolm Douglas-Hamilton, the mission of the American-Scottish Foundation is to celebrate and strengthen the links between Scotland and the United States. This is fulfilled through the pursuit of contemporary social, cultural, educational and business activities of the foundation which support the future of the Scottish American diaspora.

As the wider Spirit of the Highlands project, we were delighted to be invited to present virtually at New York Tartan Week back in April – hosted by the American Scottish Foundation and the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society – to engage listeners with the many elements of our project all inspired by the stories shared with us by you through our archive.

It was such a delight to be able to share this with listeners tuning in to the session from all over the United States and an even greater delight to be invited back by the American-Scottish Foundation to share an update on our progress on their podcast. The ScotsInUS podcast provides a wonderful platform for listeners to learn about and keep up to date with wide range of initiatives and developments currently taking place across Scotland.

Being able to share these updates relating to our digital archive and the Inverness Castle project in conversation with Camilla Hellman, MBE and President of the American-Scottish Foundation, was such a great experience. Our many thanks to the American-Scottish Foundation for inviting us to the speak on the podcast!

You can listen to the ScotsInUS podcast on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Facebook, Youtube, and Anchor.
