Spirit: 360 - A Celebration of Highlands' Arts and Culture

Hello everyone and a very Happy New Year! We hope you had a wonderful Hogmanay and festive season.

For our first Spotlight of the year, we are delighted to welcome in 2023 with an exciting announcement – the official launch of our Spirit: 360 digital gallery!

SPIRIT: 360

Supported by the Highland Place Partnership through Creative Scotland Place Partnership funding, the project was the first phase of a commissioning programme for emerging and established creative professionals – writers, musicians, filmmakers, visual artists, and others – to create new work inspired by local stories that reflect the theme ‘Spirit of the Highlands’. Commissions of up to £1,000 were made available to creative professionals based within, or originally from, The Highland Council area.

The call for creative professionals was announced in the summer of 2021 and, in the autumn, a total of 66 artists were awarded commissions to support their promising proposals. In 2022, we were also pleased to bring on board the wonderful team at Northport to document the creative journey of each artist as they brought their creations to life.

From song writing and music production to wet-plate collodion photography, oral storytelling to jewellery making, the artists brought forward their expertise in an incredible range of creative specialisms. Land, community, cultural heritage and the unique relationship between people and place in the Highlands all feature as strong underlying themes for all the pieces.

Here at the team, we have very much enjoyed following the progress of each artist on their creative ventures. Thanks to their dedication, talent and passion, their artistic visions have become reality and we are truly delighted to celebrate this outpouring of Highlands’ creative excellence with a dedicated space on our Spirit: Stories archive.

The Spirit: 360 digital platform represents an online gallery space on the Spirit: Stories archive where, for the first time, all the commissioned artists and their finished pieces are showcased together.
