Originally the "brain-child" of Stuart Brownlee, former Head of the Libraries and Archives at The Highland Council in the '90s, Am Baile (Gaelic for 'the village') was launched in May 2003. Am Baile draws together a large and varied range of engaging content which is of cultural, linguistic and historical significance to the communities of the Highlands and Islands.
Material held within the Am Baile archive numbers in the thousands and is spread across 10,000 square miles. Its outreach and commitment to community involvement have enabled the essence of Highland and Island and communities to be preserved and displayed for all to see.
To this day, Am Baile continues to be a major learning and research resource for those interested in cultural heritage and the local history of the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. It is truly a wonderful insight into the lives of Highlanders and Islanders, both past and present.
