Hunting Stag Maps

Learning to see places through the eyes of others.

The work I have made is inspired by Hector MacDonald’s poem ‘Hunting Stag’ written in 1941 whilst a prisoner of war during WWII. The poem recounts a bizarre incident involving a stalking party, a stag and a fishing boat on Loch Lochy and gives us an insight into the importance of the place names in storytelling.

By using local maps from the period, my work aims to highlight the connection between the poet and the very specific places he mentions in his story, many of which are present on modern day maps.
